Goldens Bridge FD Memorial Day Parade Back After Three Years

By Jeff Edwards, Patch Staff
May 1, 2022

After COVID cancellations in 2020 and 2021, the Goldens Bridge Fire Department will once again host a Memorial Day parade and ceremony.

The Golden's Bridge Fire Department will host a Memorial Day community event on May 30, that will begin with a parade to the firehouse, where firefighters and members of the community will gather for a wreath-laying ceremony at the historic American Legion monument in front of the building in observance of those who died in service to the country. The event will conclude with refreshments for all in attendance.

Residents, and especially military veterans who live in the Golden's Bridge Fire District, are invited to participate in the parade and should begin gathering at 9:30 a.m. at the step-off point on Todd Hill Circle in the Brady's Farm development (off Rt. 138 in Golden's Bridge, just beyond the firehouse).

The parade will kick off at 10 a.m. Children are invited to join the march with their festively-decorated bicycles and ride-ons. Residents who want to participate simply as spectators should arrive at the firehouse by 9:30 a.m. to be in place to greet the fire trucks, the contingent of uniformed firefighters bearing the American flag, and other participants as they turn into the GBFD parking lot after the procession on Rt. 138.

Golden's Bridge Fire Chief Dennis Delborgo, 1st Assistant Chief James McManus and 2nd Assistant Chief William Holze will be reading the names of the 76 Golden's Bridge residents engraved on the pair of bronze plaques affixed to the four-ton granite American Legion monument that memorializes their service in World War I and World War II. The observance will also include a flag ceremony and tolling of the fire bell for two minutes before the wreath-laying. GBFD officials will greet attendees and present brief remarks before everyone is invited to breakfast refreshments of coffee, juice, bagels, muffins and more.

The May 30 event will mark the first time since the monument was relocated to the firehouse that the GBFD is holding a public Memorial Day event. The public events planned in 2020 and in 2021, had to be canceled due to the COVID pandemic. Firefighters instead held private Memorial Day ceremonies in both of those years.

The monument had previously been located outside the Community House on Old Bedford Road in the Old Golden's Bridge section of the hamlet. When the Town of Lewisboro sold the building, the Golden's Bridge Fire Department petitioned the Town Board to relocate the memorial to the grounds of the firehouse. This was somewhat of a reunion because the GBFD was the monument's original caretaker when the American Legion designated the firehouse as its home when the department was located on Rt. 22 (now the site of the Mercedes-Benz dealership) in the 1960s.
