Changes Over COVID Concerns Didn't Derail Santa's Visit To GBFD

Nearly 180 children posed for photos with Santa and took home goodie-filled backpacks at the Golden's Bridge Firehouse curbside holiday event, even with some last-minute changes to help keep everyone safe in uncertain times.

Santa put smiles on faces and brought joy to the youngsters who dropped by the Golden's Bridge Firehouse on Sunday for the annual children's holiday party. The gathering was switched from an indoor party to an outdoor curbside event due to concerns over recent spikes in COVID-19 numbers.

Despite the change, children did not leave disappointed. Dozens of cars lined up along Rt. 138 and snaked through the firehouse parking lot, waiting patiently for their turn for a photo with Santa on his special bench (reportedly shipped directly from the North Pole). A treat-filled backpack with candy, crafts, snacks and other items was provided to every child.

"The response from our residents and families was overwhelming appreciation," Golden's Bridge Fire Chief Albert Melillo said of the successful event. "Parents told our firefighters how grateful they were to the GBFD for switching to a safe and thoughtful way of bringing holiday joy to the children of our community. They expressed their gratitude to us for taking the time to make sure their children got to visit with Santa this year."

The names of all children who came by were placed into the hopper for a free raffle drawing. The winners will be announced just before the new year.
